The Samsung Galaxy S5 was released in April 2014 as the company’s first dust and waterproof smartphone in the series, boasting an IP67-certificate which would allow it to survive for roughly 30 minutes in up to 1 meter of water. Following its release, the smartphone has been tested under various conditions by consumers and reviewers, but as it turns out the ultimate test may have been unintentionally conducted by a 70-year-old Galaxy S5 owner from South Korea, whose smartphone survived outdoors for 7 months straight.

Earlier this week Samsung Electronics shared the story of Bae Gyu-ryong; a 70-year-old customer who lost his Galaxy S5 in September 2015. Reportedly, the owner works at a medical center in Chungju, and last year in September he lost his Samsung Galaxy S5 while working in a persimmon orchard near his farmhouse, 150 km southeast of Seoul. Unfortunately, the owner claims that the smartphone was in silent mode which made it that much more difficult to locate, and after several days of searching for the device, Bae gave up and decided to buy a new smartphone. The story picks up 7 months after the aforementioned events took place, when Bae Gyu-ryong found the Samsung Galaxy S5 while plowing the field at his farmhouse. He dried out the device, recharged it, and much to his surprise, the Samsung Galaxy S5 powered on after being exposed to snow, rain, and various temperatures and weather conditions for more than half a year. Bae Gyu-ryong revealed that the smartphone was fully functional, and that he was able to recover his lost data.


Although “the Galaxy S5 boasts excellent waterproof features” according to Bae Gyu-ryong, the same cannot be said for the Samsung Galaxy S6 released last year, which lacked dust and waterproofing. However, the latest Samsung Galaxy S7 has been IP68-certified, meaning that it should withstand the forces of nature just as well as its predecessor from two years ago, if not better. In any case, it’s worth noting that if you happen to keep your Android smartphone in silent mode more often than not, and if you’re fearful that you might misplace the terminal, Google’s Android Device Manager application can locate your device as long as the service has been enabled on your phone beforehand. The app also allows users to ring their devices even when they are in silent mode.
