Opera has unveiled a new free VPN clients in the newest developer version of the Opera browser today that has no data usage caps. There are other VPN extensions out there, but Opera says that most of those are paid-subscriptions or have limited data use. Opera notes that you might want to use a VPN to keep your browsing habits private or to access region-restricted websites.

Many people use a VPN client to access region restricted websites such as Netflix. “Everyone deserves to be private online if they want to be. By adding a free, unlimited VPN directly into the browser, no additional download or extensions from an unknown third-party provider are necessary. So, today, our Opera desktop users get a handy way to boost their online privacy, as well as easier access to all their favorite online content no matter where they are,” says Krystian Kolondra, SVP, Opera.

The opera VPN has 256-bit encryption and to activate the VPN in the developer version, the users click the "O" menu and select "Settings" and then "Privacy & Security" and then turn the free VPN on. Opera also points out that while its VPN is free, it has the same solutions integrated as paid VPNs offer. It will hide your IP address, unblock firewalls and websites.

Schools might not appreciate that aspect; it allows students to bypass filters blocking inappropriate content like porn and games. The VPN also helps keep you more secure when using public WiFi. The developer release allows users to choose three virtual locations in the VPN including USA, Canada, and Germany. By time, the VPN feature rolls out to the stable version there will be more locations available to choose from. The VPN feature is on both the Windows and Mac Opera developer versions.
